Samsung Says Goodbye to Tizen: What This Means for Your Galaxy Watch

Samsung is officially retiring its Tizen operating system for smartwatches, ending an era that began with the original Galaxy Watch in 2018. If you’re still using one of these older devices, here’s what you need to know.

The End Date: September 30, 2025

Samsung’s Tizen shutdown completes on September 30, 2025. After this date, you won’t be able to download any apps or content from the Galaxy Store to your Tizen watch. Previously purchased items will remain in “My Apps,” but once deleted, they’re gone forever with no way to re-download.

Which Devices Are Affected?

This affects all Samsung smartwatches released before the Galaxy Watch 4—from the original Galaxy Gear through the Galaxy Watch 3 (2020). These devices will lose all software updates and connected service support.

Your watch won’t stop working, but without new apps, updates, or Samsung’s services, it’ll feel increasingly limited compared to modern alternatives.

Time to Upgrade?

Since the Galaxy Watch 3 (the last Tizen model) launched in 2020, most users have likely moved on already. Samsung’s current Wear OS watches offer better features, app support, and ongoing development.

This transition reflects Samsung’s focus on Google’s Wear OS platform, which provides better Android integration and access to a larger app ecosystem. If you’re still daily-driving a Tizen watch, the improved battery life, health tracking, and features of modern Wear OS devices might surprise you.
