Google unveiled Wear OS 7 at I/O 2026. Built on Android 17, it's available now to developers via the Wear OS 7 Canary Emulator, with stable rollout to supported watches later this year. It's the most substantive Wear OS update in years.

Wear Widgets replace Tiles

Full-screen Tiles are gone. Wear Widgets take over, supporting 2x1 and 2x2 layouts that match Android phone widgets. Bonus: AI-generated widgets from Android's "Create My Widget" tool sync directly to connected watches.

Live Updates come to the wrist

The same Live Updates introduced on Android 16 phones now run on Wear OS 7, replacing the older Ongoing Activities API. Notifications appear as a small icon on the watch face, then expand to a dynamic card — delivery countdowns, ride tracking, sports scores, all updating in place.

No more opening apps to check what's happening.

Gemini Intelligence — with a big asterisk

This is where the marketing gets thin. Gemini Intelligence requires Gemini Nano v3 support — the same hardware gate that currently limits it to a handful of flagship Android phones. Only new 2026 watches will qualify. Older watches get Wear OS 7 and everything else, but not Gemini Intelligence.

For qualifying hardware, the AppFunctions API lets apps work with Gemini for on-watch task automation. Theoretically useful. Practically, most current Wear OS users won't see it.

Standardized workouts

A built-in Workout Tracker brings heart rate monitoring, workout progress, and integrated media controls across fitness apps. ASICS Runkeeper is the debut partner.

This fixes a long-standing Wear OS pain point: every fitness app reinventing its own workout UI, badly.

10% better battery

Wear OS 7 is 10% easier on battery than Wear OS 6 across the board — from platform-level power optimizations. Not headline-grabbing, but enough to push more watches past full-day usage.

Smarter media controls

A Remote Output Switcher for seamless audio device switching, plus per-app auto-launch settings for the media controls interface. Small but useful for anyone who listens while moving.

Who gets it

Pixel Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch ranges are confirmed. A full compatibility list isn't out yet. Other brands — OnePlus, Mobvoi, Xiaomi — are likely but unconfirmed.

And again: receiving Wear OS 7 ≠ receiving Gemini Intelligence.

Bottom line

Wear OS 7 fixes real problems instead of just repainting the UI: glanceable info, persistent notifications, consistent fitness tracking, better battery. The Gemini story is genuinely interesting but locked to hardware most people don't own.

For everyone else, the non-AI half of the update is still the strongest Wear OS release in years.
