The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4/5 is set to receive Wear OS 4 soon

A Samsung spokesperson at a press briefing event in London confirmed that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 will receive Wear OS 4, along with numerous new features from the Galaxy Watch 6. The update, delivered as part of One UI 5 Watch, is scheduled to roll out to users’ wrists over the next couple of months.

This implies that older Wear OS-powered Galaxy Watches will receive new features like advanced sleep tracking, sleep coaching, and heart rate zone training, which were introduced with the Galaxy Watch 6.

While an exact date is not provided, this confirms Samsung’s commitment to providing ongoing support for its Watch 4 and Watch 5 smartwatches.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 appears to be a modest upgrade from the previous generation. The enhancements include an improved screen-to-body ratio and a 30% larger display (15% larger on the Watch 6 Classic). However, the upgrades to the Exynos W930 processor and battery are hardly noticeable, with the focus mainly on software improvements.

Samsung has confirmed that the new sleep tracking and heart rate training features will be made available to Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 5 as well.

With these enhancements coming to the older models, there might be fewer incentives to invest in the Galaxy Watch 6. This could potentially make the Galaxy Watch 5 a more appealing choice, especially when various deals and discounts are expected to arrive in the upcoming weeks and months.

Upgrading Wear OS smartwatches has been challenging, as evident from the issues encountered. Non-Samsung devices, for instance, had to wait for more than a year to receive Wear OS 3 after its launch on the Watch 4. Surprisingly, even the TicWatch Pro 3, which was succeeded by the TicWatch Pro 5, has not yet received the update.

In comparison, Samsung appears to have an advantage over its competitors regarding Wear OS access. The collaboration with Google to develop Wear OS 3 and the implementation of its One UI Watch skin have placed Samsung in a leading position in this regard.
