Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Could Introduce a Game-Changing Health Feature

Non-invasive blood glucose monitoring has long been a goal for wearable technology. Apple began exploring the concept in 2017, but the breakthrough has yet to be achieved, leaving diabetics reliant on costly third-party devices.

Samsung may now take the lead. Initially rumored for the Galaxy Watch Ultra, the company recently hinted the feature could debut soon. At the Samsung Health Forum, Dr. Hon Pak, senior vice president, confirmed their work on a “non-invasive optically-based continuous glucose monitor” and called it a potential “game-changer” if implemented correctly.

This rare transparency signals confidence in the technology. In a Samsung editorial, Dr. Pak reiterated the company’s efforts, highlighting its focus on combining sensor innovations and AI to target diseases like diabetes. He also mentioned developing a sensor algorithm to predict early signs of diabetes alongside non-invasive glucose monitoring and nutrition coaching.

While no release date has been confirmed, Samsung’s willingness to discuss the feature suggests it’s nearing readiness. However, Dr. Pak’s careful phrasing—“if we do it right”—reflects the high stakes. Accurate monitoring is essential, as unreliable readings could pose risks to users.

The Galaxy Watch 8 could feature early versions of the technology, such as predictive algorithms, but achieving continuous, non-invasive glucose monitoring might take longer, potentially debuting with the Galaxy Watch 9 or later.
